Volunteer Job Description

Religious Education (RE) class leaders are role models for our youth. They are trusted adults who model our religion in action and demonstrate our vision of how to live in the world. A curriculum is provided to help guide teachers in providing a safe, consistent environment in which to explore our religious faith.

Leaders should connect with their co-leader in advance of their scheduled Sunday to discuss the lesson plan, decide mutual responsibilities, and any other planning logistics. Please review the curriculum before the Sunday you teach. Links to curriculum are available to teachers online or via hard copy from the Director of Religious Education (DRE).

Be prepared and ready to engage the students in the Sunday morning lesson.

Leaders choose the Sundays that they are able to share with the children. If you are unable to teach on a day you’ve chosen, please notify the DRE as soon as possible and work with them to find a replacement.

Leaders have the right to a classroom of children who are attentive and engaged. A continuously disruptive child is demonstrating that they are not able to participate successfully at the moment. Leaders have the right AND responsibility to the class to give verbal warning(s) to disruptive students. If the warning is ineffective, direct a student into the hall for discussion of their behavior and its consequences. If the child does not want to return to the class, or refuses to abide by classroom covenant and code of conduct, direct them to the DRE.

Each adult working with children must have a recent background check on file with the DRE with yearly verbal updates as to any change in status.

RE classes run for one full hour and begin when the children are sung out of the service. When the lesson is complete, leaders should bring all children in attendance downstairs together to their parents.

Please return all supplies to their appropriate locations in the classroom and ensure that the classroom is clean before leaving. Committees meet in classrooms during the week and respect for others is integral to our code of conduct.

Volunteers experiencing issues with ANYTHING (curriculum, students, other volunteers, resources, field trips, etc.) please ask for help from the DRE.
